STANDING IN THE HALL outside the little hospital café, Taka tried Jimmy once more. No answer. He hadn’t wanted to text but also didn’t want to wait any longer. Something happened with Aaron. Andrea in ER. Fine, but could probably hear from you.

His phone rang. Scott.

Taking her home soon. He hit send and answered, “Hey.”

“I’m surprised you picked up,” Scott said.

“When have I ever been passive aggressive?”

“That’s fair. But I’m still happy you’re talking to me.”

Taka ran his hand over his lower jaw. He should’ve shaved this morning. “Now’s not a good time. I’m in the ER with Andrea.”

“Why?”

“Panic attack.” Was his lying to Scott any worse than Scott’s lying to him?

“She’s in a scary situation.”

Scott didn’t know the half of it. His stomach rolled. He backed against the wall and leaned forward to breath better. “Everything wash out okay with Bulldog Bailey?”

“It was something to do about a woman the senator was involved with. Left her high and dry, I guess. I don’t know why Bulldog’s involved. Or why she just doesn’t go to the press. I can hear you breathing, are you okay?”

Taka stood up. “Yeah. See you tonight?”

“If you don’t mind me coming in after two am.”

“That’s fine.

“Call me if anything else happens before then.”

“I will. Bye.” Taka thumbed the call off on Scott’s “See you.”

He leaned his head back against the wall with his eyes closed.

“Hey,” a rough male voice said. The guy cleared his throat.

Taka opened his eyes. Bony addict guy from Clay. Hell if Taka could remember his name. “Commander.”

The corner of the guy’s mouth twitched up. “Bowman. Luke.”

“Taka.”

“I remember.” He pulled his tee shirt down at the collar. A big square of gauze and tape covered part of his collar bone, a loop of clear plastic tubing showing. “Just got another central line.”

“Cancer?”

“Stubborn infection. Had sepsis a couple of months ago.”

That explained a lot. Taka didn’t know the aftereffects, but he knew people mostly died of sepsis. Watching him turn that over, the commander almost smiled. “Sorry,” Taka said.

“Your van driver? Cash Conlon was a woman.”

The police report from Enterprise said no copy of the driver’s license had been made and included an affidavit from the employee who rented the van saying that the renter’s description matched the license. All he remembered was the renter was a Caucasian male. “And how’d you come by that info?”

Commander Bowman shrugged. “I’m not a cop. I asked because it was my address used and Miss Emily shared that Cash Conlon was an older woman.”

“And did Miss Emily say why they accepted the fake license?”

“Cash?”

“Cash Conlon.” Taka rolled his eyes. “Was she the rental agent?”

“No. She doesn’t work there anymore.”

“Grapevine?”

“Grows thick in these parts.”

“That it does.” Taka held out his hand.

The commander shook it. “Grapevine says you’re a good cop.”

“Admin might not agree.”

And for the first time, Taka could see the SEAL inside as the commander grinned. “Fuck Admin.”

Taka laughed. “I might have to.”

The commander clapped him on the shoulder and wandered off.

Taka checked his watch and called Fields to tell him about the former Enterprise employee named Emily and Cash Conlon.
